features and more

Filed under: ZenMagick — DerManoMann @ 11:50 am

Looking back at my latest roadmap update, I am actually surprised how many items on that list are already ticked off!

Admittedly, there are some outstanding issues I am not really looking forward to tackling. This could be either I am not that much interested in them (usually the store front UI stuff), or I haven’t got any idea yet as to how to implement :?

Still, while being perhaps a bit ahead in the race it might be a good time to ask for feature requests. I am sure there are lots of things that might be essential, nice to have,  or just good to impress your users/customers. So, drop me a comment or an email and I’ll see what I can do.

There ar, of course, a couple new things I didn’t write about so far. For once thing there is generic RSS support. New feeds may be created by extending the new ZMRssController class. The default feeds so far will include:

  • reviews
  • new products
  • specific chapter of EZ-pages; s, for example, if you set up a particular chapter and add pages over time, the new
pages will show up in the feed

The next big chunk are email views. You’ll be able to customize your email content similar to the content views. Also, there will be support for both HTML and text versions. However, only one or the other is required. If there is only a text view, emails will be send as text, even if HTML is configured/selected.

On the other hand, if only HTML is  available, a stripped down version will be send as text, similar to what happens now. I guess not all emails will be implemented right away - if no view is found, the default zen-cart code will be called as fallback option.

There will also be again some changes to the build process - most noticeably I added file changelog that lists all added/changed/removed files. The basis is a direct comparison of released zip files and therefore should be exact.

The other benefit coming from this new feature is that I now can offer incremental updates that include only the changed files. However, this might  require a manual step to remove obsolete files.

There are also plans to include a full file list that might make it possible to completely remove a ZenMagick installation without the need to manually delete files! This should make it easier for people to try ZenMagick in the knowledge that they can get rid of it without any pain.

  1. HI

    This product looks really promosing.

One thing though, can you please implement 2Checkout Payment processing.

The developers at Zencart dont give any weight to this.

  2. Hmm,

Looks to me as if there is a payment module to do that already. Looks like that is what you are looking for: http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&cPath=40_48&products_id=180

  3. Hi

Yes, but its outdated and it causes lots of problem. Just check the forum on that. No one seems to help and the one who developed it isnt supporting it anymore.

  4. I see what you mean. It’s just that I have already enough on my plate and this does not quite fit into ZenMagick. So, if you asking me to fix this for free, I’d have to say no.
I have done payment modules, in particular the one for DPS (see: http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&cPath=40_48&products_id=357),
so I know what I am talking about. I’d need a test account which would cost money. I would need time I’d rather spend on ZenMagick…

Having said that, if you or anyone are keen, you can always contact me through my *commercial* address martin mixedmatter.co.nz (you’ll know where to put the ‘@’, right?) and we can talk about commercial support for this (or any other zen-cart/ZenMagick development).

  5. Hi

In that case, I will rather buy CS-Cart which supports all the major payment and is much better.

anyhow thanks anyway, you also gave the same answer as the Zencart Devs.

no difference between your project direction and theirs.

  6. Well, I guess it is getting harder to get something good for free these days!

I think there is a slight misunderstanding here about what I do. ZenMagick is something I really like to do. It’s fun and I don’t mind sharing it with other people. In fact, that is part of the fun. It is perhaps the main reason why I don’t mind working on it in *my* spare time.

However, doing something that is not my choice and doesn’t quite fit in with what I do (ZenMagick is a MVC based frontend for zen-cart, not something that does payments!) is different.
If someone else is asking me to do some work for his/her benefit it sounds almost like work, eh? I therefore reserve the right to ask for some compensation if I feel the work I am asked to do doesn’t quite fit into ZenMagick.

Ironically, though, you don’t mind giving someone else your money in order to get what you want…
